Spartanburg, South Carolina--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AFL, an international manufacturer of fiber optic cables, equipment, and accessories, is launching the Apex™ series of fiber optic splice boxes—a multi-year development effort The culmination of which includes extensive voice customer surveys. Apex connector closures are designed to reduce overall installation time through easier-to-use sealing and cable retention methods and industry-leading density, especially when combined with AFL's LM series MicroCore® cables or SpiderWeb Ribbon® powered winding tube cables .

“When I started my optical fiber career as a field engineer, the implementation of the 144-core optical fiber backbone connector was considered a timely matter,” explained Will Miller, senior product manager for cable and connection products at AFL's external factory. "As the number of fibers today is as high as 6,912, connector closure manufacturers have to adapt their solutions to find compatibility with these increased densities. Apex connector covers are designed with high density in mind. No modification is required."

Field installers and engineers can perform 1,728 splices in a 20-inch long dome or 3,456 splices in a 25-inch long dome. With the easy-to-use wedge-shaped gel sealing system, as network reliability improves, installation time is greatly reduced.

The initial Apex splice box includes X-2 and X-2S sizes. When 200 µm spider web ribbons are used, their maximum capacities are 1,728 and 3,456 fibers, respectively. 2021 will be followed by other sizes with lower and higher capacities.

Apex optical fiber splice boxes extend AFL's comprehensive optical fiber connection product line, including hardened pre-terminated multi-port terminals and branches, optical fiber distribution hubs, box covers, field-installable connectors, etc. Apex splice boxes are ideal for applications including enterprise/campus LAN, ADSS core, utility fiber to the home, service provider access, long-term and dark fiber.
